O Tannenbaum
arranged for two guitars by Tom Poore

“O Tannenbaum” is a German carol. The lyrics we know today were written in 1824 by the Leipzig composer Ernst Anschütz (1780-1861). He wrote his words a 16th century folk song by Melchior Franck (c. 1579-1639). The Franck original was a sad love song, comparing the faithful evergreen tree to a faithless lover. To this original, Anschütz added verses of his own. Over time the original verses faded from popularity, and the Anschütz version has become a Yuletide favorite.

Perhaps my arrangement is a bit arcane, but I couldn’t resist doing it as a fugue. Since it’s in three voices, this duet also can be done as a trio merely by having two players divvy up the second guitar part.

This melody is also used for the official state song “Maryland, My Maryland.” So the good citizens of that state can appropriately play my arrangement any time of year. (Go Terps!)
