Wenceslas I, the Duke of Bohemia, had the misfortune of being born into an ambitious family—during a political power struggle, he was assassinated in 935 by his brother. Soon after, tales of miracles at his tomb unnerved his murderous sibling, who had the body relocated to the Church of Saint Vitus. Wenceslas was revered by his people, and within a few decades several hagiographies popped up, cementing his benevolent reputation. A later chronicler wrote: “...no one doubts that, rising every night from his noble bed, with bare feet and only one chamberlain, he went around to God’s churches and gave alms generously to widows, orphans, those in prison and afflicted by every difficulty, so much so that he was considered, not a prince, but the father of all the wretched.” Wenceslas is the patron saint of the Czech Republic.
I recorded my duet arrangement (playing both parts) on December 24, 2019. Enjoy.
